Maribor, Slovenia, once again hosts the UCI World Cup this year, this
time with a double event: 4X and downhill. Maribor returned to the
Nissan UCI World Cup calendar in 2007, hosting the season’s final triple
event. It went on to be voted second best downhill and 4X World Cup
organizer of the season.
Maribor is a lively city with a population of more than 100,000 – that figure doubles when the surrounding area is taken into account. The advantage of this World Cup venue is the mixture of cosmopolitan life and open air facilities. Accommodation varies from ski chalets on the mountain to downtown hotels. After training on the mountain bike course, teams have the opportunity to hit some city shopping, restaurants and cafés.
Mountain biking has a long tradition in Maribor. The first cross-country races were already held on Pohorje in the early 90's, but the sport really boomed after the first World Cup was organized here in 1999. Since then, Maribor has become one of the most visited events in the MTB World Cup series. Passionate bike fans flow in from all over the country as well as from neighboring Austria, Italy, Croatia and Hungary. Spectator numbers often exceed 11’000 per day, especially for the most popular attraction - the downhill race day.
